About Myoko Kogen

About Myoko Kogen

Myoko Kogen is nestled in the Niigata Prefecture, positioned inland on the west coast of Honshu, about 40 mins by train from Nagano (home of the 1998 Winter Olympics). Considered amongst Japan’s premier ski areas whilst remaining largely undiscovered by foreign tourists, Myoko is home to more than half a dozen individual resort areas within a short drive from the village. In addition to these mountains, Powder Recon offers guests another four mountain destinations within an hour’s drive of the village plus an extra 5 ‘mystery’ resorts for the 2016/17 season. This means the best selection of optimal snow and terrain conditions to choose from, consistent deep powder (up to 13m annually) and less crowds for Powder Recon clients – all the while remaining authentically Japanese.

The village is unique compared to the typical western style ski resort village you might find in Hakuba or Niseko. Après ski activities don’t incorporate loud, grungy bars and the absence of foreign tourists mean Japanese infrastructure and amenities remain largely in tact.  Après ski is generally quieter in this area with more of an emphasis on relaxation, rather than partying. Our guests can enjoy the many onsens in the village or partake in a few sakes with friends in one of the village’s izakayas (small bars where you can drink and order tapas-style food).

The centre of the village comprises a main street that dissects the town, with small shops, cafes and restaurants either side. Here you’ll find ramen (noodle) shops, izakayas, ski/board rental shops, coffee shops, gift shops as well as the odd karaoke bar.
